As some of you may be aware, Doug and I have been searching for a rug that we both like (there in it lies the problem) and will work in our living room. We took a second trip the to Flooring Mill Store off of exit 14 on 85 north this past weekend and thought we had found the perfect rug. We did find another and decided, at their request, to take them home on approval. We got them home and really like the one and felt okay about the other. This was Saturday afternoon.
Saturday night I had noticed a slight odor, but thought it must be something from outside since it was fleeting. Sunday while I was gone to a meeting Doug must have also noticed the smell and started investigating.
Come to find out our beloved rug the would end our more than a year search smelled of tires or rubber. It was not super strong, but you defintely would smell it from time to time.
Being the analytical mind he is, he surfed the internet to see what it might could be and if there is anything that could be done about it.
To our horror, not only did we learn that 99% of people that had experienced the smell from their rugs could not get rid of the smell and some have had the rugs for years!!! To top it off it appears the smell comes from a natural latex type material they used to help secure the hand knots and has caused health problems in both adults and children. Needless to say we took both rugs back and our search continues.
